School Curriculum in the Junior Phase (Grades 8 & 9) pupils may choose their second language subject (Afrikaans or Sotho), but all other subjects are compulsory.
English, Afrikaans/Sotho, Mathematics, General Science, History & Geography, Economic & Management Sciences, Information Technology, Computer Literacy, Art & Culture, Religious Education, and Life Orientation Skills. Business Studies in Grade 10 is offered for immigrant children only.
Immigrants: A child/dependant of a diplomatic representative of a foreign government accredited in SA; or a person who first enrolled and entered a South African school in Gr 7 or a more senior grade; or a pupil having begun his or her schooling at a school in SA and has attended school outside SA for 2 or more consecutive years after Gr 6 or its equivalent, is eligible for immigrant status.
Immigrants must have relevant official documentation from the Department of Home Affairs and relevant official documentation from the school where they entered a SA school system for the first time. Pupils who enter a South African School for the first time in Grade 8, are expected to take Afrikaans/Sesotho but will be exempt from a school language from Grade 10 onwards. In place of the 1st additional language, the student must choose an alternate subject – these choices are only granted with the High School Deputy Head's approval.
The senior curriculum also incorporates Religious Education.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
The Religious Ethos is integral to our school life. Religious Education is aimed at helping pupils grow in faith and face the problems of life. It is a broad-based inclusive approach which does not seek to impose a particular doctrine.
Worship is an important part of school life. Mass is held at the beginning and end of each school term. At 12:00 daily the Angelus Bell rings and classes are suspended for prayer. Through worship and prayer we strive to give pupils a living experience of faith.
Mentorship At St Dominic's pupils are divided into Mentor Groups, where a teacher takes personal interest in this mixed group of children from all grades. To facilitate a close relationship, pupils stay with one mentor right throughout their high school careers, receiving guidance, assistance, advice, care and discipline. The mentor gradually develops an intimate knowledge of the pupil as a person, and as such is able to build a relationship that promotes trust, friendship, care, self-respect and self-discipline, and liaises with parents if concerns arise.
Tests and examinations
The National Senior Certificate (NSC) of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) is recognised both locally and internationally.
School examinations are written mid-year and end of year by Grades 8 – 10. Grades 11 and 12 write exams at the end of Term 3 as well.
